[Since the beginning of the war in the Balkans, the US Embassy in Belgrade has remained closed. Now that the conflict is over, the prospects for the renewal of visa processing are improved (though as long as Milosovic is in power this will be difficult). The Consular Section of the US Embassy in Belgrade, Yugoslavia issues both immigrant and nonimmigrant visas, as well as processes refugees. Obtaining a nonimmigrant visa requires the applicant to prove that they intend to depart the US after their authorized stay. Current country conditions may be taken into consideration in making this determination of intent, as may the applicant’s personal situation. The immigrant visa section has hours of operation of 8:00 AM to 10:00 AM, and issues visas for immediate relative of US citizens, employment based immigration, fiance(e) visas, and diversity lottery winners. The waiting period for an immigrant visa is generally four to six weeks. The immigrant visa section has jurisdiction over Serbia-Montenegro, Macedonia, and Bosnia-Herzogovina. The refugee processing breaks down into three classes. Fist, those who are particularly vulnerable and at risk; second, Bosnian refugees who were detained by the Yugoslav government on account of race, political opinion, religion, and have not yet been settled; and third, Bosnian refugees with family currently in the US. The refugee program is assisted by the UN High Commission for Refugees and the International Organization for Migration.
