NACARA REGISTRATION PERIOD BEGINS
On June 21, 1999, the registration period for benefits under the Nicaraguan Adjustment and Central American Relief Act (NACARA) began. NACARA provides relief from deportation and removal for certain individuals from Central American and former Soviet bloc countries. Applications for NACARA relief should be made on Form I-881. This form is available on the SSHD website, and on the INS website. The form is available in both English and Spanish. The INS recently released statistics on the number of potential ABC/NACARA applications in each INS asylum office. The statistics are as follows: Guatemalans Arlington: 6,000 Chicago: 3,500 Houston: 4,500 Los Angeles: 54,600 Miami: 9,300 Newark: 7,300 New York: 3,200 San Francisco: 7,000 Salvadorans Arlington: 29,800 Chicago: 3,900 Houston: 15,500 Los Angeles: 83,800 Miami: 3,600 Newark: 10,000 New York: 18,600 San Francisco: 11,300 .
