FLORIDA GOVERNOR CRITICIZES FEDERAL ENFORCEMENT
On March 19th, Florida Governor Jeb Bush sent an open letter to Attorney General Janet Reno, taking the federal government to task for what he terms a failure to enforce immigration laws. The letter follows previous criticism from Bush after the drowning of an unknown number of Haitians off the coast of South Florida in early March. A White House spokesman said the administration has no plan to change its policy, and that they are "doing everything [they] can to discourage people from risking their lives to make the voyage." The U.S. Coast Guard has also said it will not change its procedures. Bush’s primary complaint is that even though the number of smuggled immigrants have risen each month for the past two years, and despite the tremendous increase in the number of Border Patrol agents, there have been no new agents placed in south Florida for over ten years. Bush also called for the expansion of the facilities at Krome Detention Facility and suggested a federal task force address the issue.
