TEXAS GOVERNOR BUSH EXPRESSES SYMPATHY FOR MEXICAN IMMIGRANTS
Texas Gov. George W. Bush, considered the early frontrunner for the Republican Party presidential nomination, expressed sympathy for the plight of Mexican immigrants to the U.S. in an interview with the Mexican newspaper Reforma. He also expressed concern about what he sees as the increasing isolationism and protectionism in both the Republican and Democratic parties. Bush said he believes the primary cause of the pressure to emigrate is the economic situation in Mexico, saying the only way to reduce the flow of people across the border is increased economic growth and opportunity in Mexico and countries further south. To create this economic improvement, Gov. Bush would consider extending the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) to include countries to the south of Mexico. Gov. Bush has not yet formally announced his candidacy for President, an announcement that is expected to come before the end of the year. In his re-election as governor in November 1998, he won almost 50% of the Hispanic vote.
