GUINEA-BISSAU DESIGNATED FOR TEMPORARY PROTECTED STATUS
In light of an ongoing civil war, Temporary Protected Status (TPS) has been granted to nationals of Guinea-Bissau, effective from March 11, 1999 to March 10, 2000. To be eligible, the person must have been physically present in the U.S. on March 11, 1999. There are believed to be about 300 eligible people in the U.S. Those who are granted TPS will also be given work authorization. An application for TPS will not have any adverse effect on a pending asylum claim, or one that has not yet been filed. The application for TPS is Form I-821, and must be accompanied by a filing fee. All application must also include Form I-765, Application for Employment Authorization. If employment is not sought, no filing fee is required, otherwise the filing fee is 0. Applicants for TPS who have already filed an asylum claim and been granted work authorization should file another Form I-765, but do not need to submit any fee. The Attorney General is required to review the TPS 60 days before it expires to determined whether conditions in Guinea-Bissau warrant its extension. The outcome of this determination will be announced in the Federal Register.
