INS ANNOUNCES EXTENSION OF EMPLOYMENT ELIGIBILITY VERIFICATION PROGRAM TO NEBRASKA
Beginning in March 1999, Nebraska will join California, Florida, Illinois, New York, and Texas as a participating state in the Basic Pilot Program. The program is a free service, offered by the INS and the Social Security Administration (SSA) to any employer who wishes to participate, that confirms employment eligibility via an electronic search of social security numbers and alien registration numbers. Nebraska was chosen to join the program because of the ongoing INS enforcement effort Operation Vanguard, which is targeting the meat processing industry in the state. Participation is voluntary for most employers. Those required to participate are limited to the federal government and certain employers in the participating states found to have committed specified violations.
