INS REPORTS ON "MAIL-ORDER BRIDES" AND IMMIGRATION
As required by the 1996 Immigration Act, the INS has issued a report to Congress on the rapidly growing mail-order bride industry. A great deal of attention has been placed on the issue of mail order brides and domestic violence. Interestingly, less than 1 percent of cases involved marriage fraud that could be linked to the mail order bride industry. The report also indicated the following: - More than 300 international matchmaking organizations operated in the United States in 1998
- These organizations bring together 4,000 to 5,000 couples yearly who marry and petition for the immigration of the female spouse to this county.
- Most of the women are Filipina or from newly independent states of the Former Soviet Union.
