US CONSULAR CHIEF IN CHINA ADDRESSES CONCERNS ABOUT VISA FOR CHINESE STUDENTS
Following the release of the Cox Report into allegations of Chinese espionage into the US nuclear weapons program and the accidental bombing of the Chinese embassy in Belgrade, there have been concerns that Chinese students would face a difficult time gaining visas to study in the US. Contrary to expectations, there has been no change in the number of visas issued to Chinese students and scholars, according to the first secretary-consul chief of visa services in Beijing, Charles Bennett. One reason for this is that visa eligibility is determined first, and then any possible security concerns are addressed.
Bennett also claims that 1,000 more visas were issued in the June to August time period in 1999 than during the same period in 1998. However, there is still uncertainty and debate about the number of visas issued to Chinese students this year.
