INS INTRODUCES 24 HOUR NATIONAL CUSTOMER SERVICE CENTER
The INS has quietly debuted the National Customer Service Center, a 24 hour live hotline that will be available for people wanting to make requests about the status of their case and for other purposes including informing the agency of changes of address.
Not all INS offices are part of the new system. For example, the INS Regional Service Centers will not be a part of the system until January 2001.
Right now, 23 local INS offices are in the NCSC system. Most of those offices are in the eastern half of the US
The NCSC can be reached by calling 800-375-5283. The number will only work from area codes currently serviced by the NCSC.
When the system is fully functional, customers will call into an automated phone system. If a caller requests live assistance, he or she will be transferred to a first tier Customer Service Representative. These information officers will answer basic questions using automated scripts and call guides. If they get a question beyond the scope of the information available, the caller will be transferred to a second tier.
