POSSIBLE RIOT AT INS DETENTION CENTER
We have received word from an immigration attorney regarding a possible riot at an INS detention facility in El Centro, California. The attorney learned of the conflict from a client who called the attorney when the client thought something serious was about to occur. The attorney contacted the INS and had the client moved to a different area within the facility.
After speaking to the INS after the alleged incident, the attorney was told that the situation was brought under control very quickly, and that everyone obtained necessary medical attention. The attorney was also told that the level of stress among the detainees was increased because of rumors of changes in legislation. Furthermore, the INS said some detainees were concerns about possible problems because of the Y2K computer bug.
The client tells a different story. According to him, about 80 people were involved in a riot. The facility was locked down and detainees were unable to make phone calls. He further noted that during the incident guards merely watched through the windows as people attacked each other. He also reports that contrary to the INS version of events, many people did not receive needed medical attention for days.
