US SUSPENDS VISAS OF THOSE INVOLVED IN KOSOVO REPRESSION AND THOSE WHO SUPPORT THE MILOSEVIC REGIME
In response to the ongoing conflict within the former nation of Yugoslavia, President Clinton has issued a proclamation suspending the entry into the US of people with certain ties to the conflict. The President has asserted this authority under section 212(f) of the Immigration and Naturalization Act.
The people who are suspended from entering the US on either an immigrant or nonimmigrant visa are
· Slobodan Milosevic and other senior political and military leaders of Yugoslavia and Serbia who were involved in the recent actions against the civilian population in Kosovo;
· Officials within Yugoslavia and Serbia who are involved in the suppression of free speech and democratic efforts in Yugoslavia, Serbia, Montenegro and Kosovo;
· Officials of Yugoslavia and Serbia and private citizens who engage in financial transactions that support the Yugoslav or Serbian governments, or that personally benefit Milosevic or members of his regime; and
· Spouses and close family members of people described above whose entry into the US would not the in the US’s best interests
The proclamation creates an exception for people whose entry might otherwise be forbidden when their entry is not contrary to the interests of the US.
