DALLAS EPISCOPALIAN BISHOP DENOUNCES US IMMIGRATION POLICY
During a religious conference, the Second Congress for New Evangelization 2000, held in Cuautitlan, Mexico, Bishop Charles Graham spoke out against US immigration policy, particularly as it effects Mexicans seeking a better life in the US. He said his office is overwhelmed with requests for assistance by people who want to legalize their status in the US and that it has been lobbying the government for years to stop deporting large numbers of people with long histories and families in the US.
The work of churches and religious organization in the Southwest US was essential in bringing about the amnesty of 1986 under which thousands of people were able to gain legal status in the US. They are still one of the primary sources of legal aid for migrants who have little money and little understanding of the complexities of US immigration law.
