POLL INDICATES FLORIDIANS SUPPORTS DECREASED IMMIGRATION LEVELS
A recent poll conducted by the Miami Herald and the St. Petersburg Times shows that people in Florida are in favor of decreasing current levels of immigration, and are in favor of the US policy of repatriating Cuban migrants apprehended at sea. As a group, only Hispanics favored current levels of immigration, but only by a slim 51%, as opposed to 49% who wanted reduced levels of immigration.
Over 40% of those polled favored the current US policy toward Cuban refugees, allowing those who land in the US to stay and returning those stopped at sea to Cuba. This position was supported by only one-third of the Hispanics polled. Forty percent of Hispanics polled were in favor of allowing all Cubans who make it to US territorial waters to come to the US.
Forty-four percent of those polled opposed the embargo against Cuba and wanted to see it end. However, public sentiment on this issue is by no means unified, as demonstrated by the fact that 19% of the people polled were undecided on this issue.
