Y2K TO CAUSE SUSPENSION OF VISA ISSUANCES AT US CONSULATES
Concern that the Y2K bug will cause computer system malfunctions at the State Department has led the agency to announce plans to suspend consular processing of non-immigrant and immigrant visas at US consulates around the world. For the first two days of the year, no non-immigrant visas will be issued at consular posts. For the first two weeks of the year, no immigrant visas will be approved. The consulates expect to also need the extra manpower to assist US citizens experiencing emergency Y2K-related problems overseas. The State Department is also discouraging prospective adoptive parents from going overseas at the beginning of the year.
