WASHINGTON, D.C. AREA SCHOOL CONTRACTS WITH TRANSLATION SERVICE TO HELP IMMIGRANT PARENTS
Montgomery County, Maryland public schools have contracted with a California based translation service to provide translations in 140 languages for parents of children in the school system who do not speak English. The move is the latest by School Superintendent Jerry Weast in his effort to get immigrant parents more involved in their children’s education, thereby hopefully improving their children’s academic performance.
The translation service is provided via telephone, with calls costing between $2.25 and $4.50 per minute. School officials do not have any estimate as to how much the service will cost, but as Superintended Weast said “there is an estimate of the cost of failure, and it’s huge.”
Advocates applaud the move, but stress the need to make immigrant parents aware that the service is available. The school system is also continuing its efforts to find more bilingual teachers.
