USIA MERGES WITH STATE DEPARTMENT
Effective as of October 1, 1999, the United States Information Agency is no longer a separate federal agency, and is now part of the Department of State. One of the most important functions performed by the USIA, reviewing requests for waivers of the two-year home residency requirement, has been transferred to the Visa Office of the Bureau of Consular Affairs.
People with pending waiver cases and advisory opinions may inquire as to the status of their case through the Public Inquiries Division at (202)663-1225, fax number (202)663-3899, and email legalnet@state.gov.
The agency had promised a seamless transition, but we have now received a number of reports from people who have been told by the agency that cases will be delayed by many weeks while the officers of the USIA waiver review branch are moved. Indeed, one source says it will be November 22nd at the earliest before any waiver requests are adjudicated.
The USIA website is still available at http://www.usia.gov.
