CHILEAN JOURNALIST RECEIVES ASYLUM IN THE US
Alejandra Matus, a journalist in her native Chile, fled that country last spring after a book she wrote was impounded and a warrant for her arrest was issued. She arrived in the US and sought asylum, which has been granted. The book, titled The Black Book About Chilean Justice, examines the country’s judiciary during the years 1973 to 1990, when Augusto Pinochet was the dictatorial leader of the country. It condemns the courts’ failure to protect human rights during this era.
The book was impounded after the former President of Chile’s Supreme Court brought suit against it. The book depicts him as an alcoholic. The book is still banned in Chile, but is available on the Internet and has been selling in Chile on the black market.
