INS RELEASES CHINESE ASYLUM SEEKERS
Twenty-five Chinese asylum seekers have been released from a county jail in Illinois after the INS agreed that they could be safely housed in shelters and with family. As we reported last month, of the hundreds of Chinese who landed in Guam in recent months, 89 were brought to the US to pursue asylum claims. These people were housed in a jail in southern Illinois because the INS feared they would be threatened by smugglers attempting to collect fees ranging from $30,000 to $40,000.
This plan drew the ire of immigrant advocates for placing the asylum seekers in jail and denying them access to legal representation and interpreters that will be necessary as they pursue their asylum claims. Therefore, the INS has released them. The remaining detainees will be released when arrangements are made for their travel.
