CENSUS FIGURES REVEAL NEW IMMIGRANTS LOCATE IN TRADITIONAL IMMIGRANT CENTERS
According to statistics released by the US Census Bureau, the modern wave of immigrants has settled in the same areas in the US that were historically home to newcomers. The report, released October 15th, is the most in depth examination of foreign-born residents of the US since 1970, and was funded largely by the INS.
The report revealed that contrary to many people’s expectations, the recent surge in immigration has not been felt across the country, but has rather been concentrated in areas that have traditionally seen large numbers of immigrants, such as California, New York, and New Jersey. Indeed, 72% of all foreign-born residents live in just six states, the three listed above, plus Texas, Florida and Illinois.
Other parts of the country have been virtually untouched by immigration, including most of the Midwest and the Southeast, where the number of foreign-born residents is well below the national average of 9.7%. In no southern state, with the exception of Florida, is more than 3.6% of the population foreign-born, and in most southern states it is less than 2%.
