BORDER PATROL AGENT CONVICTED OF INSURANCE FRAUD
Papa Gakou, once an immigrant from Senegal, now a US citizen and member of the US Border Patrol, has been convicted of misdemeanor insurance fraud and sentenced to three years probation. He came to the attention of the authorities when he attempted to enroll his sister in the California health insurance program Medi-Cal.
While investigating this case, officials discovered that Gakou had obtained medical care for another sister by saying she was his wife. The necessary hospitalization was covered by Gakou’s health insurance, which is partially funded by the federal government. Gakou admitted that what he did was wrong, but explained that his sister was seriously ill and could not afford medical care. He has since repaid the insurance company, but a warrant has been issued for his sister on five counts of insurance fraud.
