CALIFORNIA GOVERNOR VETOES LAW THAT WOULD HAVE EASED IMMIGRATION REQUIREMENTS FOR DRIVER’S LICENSES
Gov. Gray Davis has vetoed a bill that would have eliminated the requirement that immigrants prove they are legally in the US before receiving a California driver’s licenses. The sponsors of the legislation argued that the bill would have aided the state’s economy by making it easier for foreign nationals doing business in the state to drive. When temporary licenses expire, it often takes a long time to replace them. In his veto statement, Gov. Davis said the requirement of proving one is legally in the US is an important anti-fraud measure. He noted that there may be ways to improve the speed with which temporary licenses are issued.
