HOUSE PROPOSES LEGISLATION THAT WOULD STOP DEPORTATION OF SOME LONG TERM PERMANENT RESIDENTS
H.R.2999, the Fairness for Permanent Residents Act of 1999, introduced by Rep. Bill McCollum (R-FL) and co-sponsored by Reps. Lincoln Diaz-Balart (R-FL), Ileana Roa-Lehtinen (R-FL), Robert Wexler (D-FL), Brian Bilbray (R-CA), and Doug Ose (R-CA), would alleviate many of the harsher provision of the 1996 immigration laws. In particular, the bill would change laws that call for the deportation of long-term permanent residents. Currently, the law calls for the deportation of permanent residents who have been convicted of many crimes, including minor drug offenses and “aggravated felonies,” which are almost all crimes punishable by a year or more in prison.
To qualify under this new bill, the person must have been in the US for seven continuous years, and must have been a permanent resident for at least five years.
