PRESIDENT CLINTON ANNOUNCES INCREASE IN REFUGEE ADMISSIONS FOR 1999
Because of the crisis in Kosovo and the large numbers of refugees created by it, President Clinton has made the decision to increase the number of refugees the U.S. can admit during fiscal year 1999. The original limit of 78,000 has been increased to 91,000.
The limits on the number of refugees that will be accepted from each region of the world are as follows:
Africa 12,000
East Asia 9,000
Latin America/Caribbean 3,000
Near East/South Asia 4,000
Europe 61,000
Unallocated 2,000
The numbers and allocations for fiscal year 2000 have also been announced. The total will be 90,000, and will be allocated as follows:
Africa 18,000
East Asia 8,000
Latin America/Caribbean 3,000
Near East/South Asia 8,000
Europe 47,000 (27,000 of these are allocated for the former Yugoslavia and 20,000 for newly independent states and the Baltic states)
Unallocated 6,000
