SOCIAL SECURITY ADMINISTRATION HALTS INS INVESTIGATION OF MIDWESTERN MEATPACKING INDUSTRY
Operation Vanguard, the INS program targeting undocumented workers in the mid-western meatpacking industry has come to a halt because of concerns of the Social Security Administration (SSA). The program, which has thus far been in operation only in Nebraska, was set to expand to other area states, until the SSA announced it was unsure it could continue participation.
An essential element of Operation Vanguard is checking employment records against SSA records. This element raised privacy concerns at SSA. A spokesman for SSA says the agency may have contributed too much information during the program, and have now put in place guidelines about what can and cannot be shared with INS.
