PORTUGAL, SINGAPORE AND URUGUAY ADDED TO VISA WAIVER PILOT PROGRAM
Beginning August 9, 1999, the Visa Waiver Pilot Program (VWPP) has three new participants. Following the addition of Portugal, Singapore and Uruguay, there are now 29 countries participating in the VWPP.
To be eligible for the VWPP, the country must have a low rate of denials of visitor visas, issue machine-readable passports, and provide reciprocal treatment for US nationals. The Attorney General must also make a determination that inclusion of the country in the VWPP will not harm US security interests.
Visitors to the US on the VWPP are limited to a 90-day stay, and they are not allowed to work or attend school. Furthermore, those who have entered the US in this way are not eligible to adjust status.
The VWPP is currently authorized through April 30, 2000. The other countries that participate are Andorra, Argentina, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Brunei, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Monaco, The Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, San Marino, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom.
