ANTI-IMMIGRANT BILLBOARDS IN NEW YORK CITY SPARK PROTESTS
Residents of a diverse Queens, New York City community were shocked when billboards began appearing in the area advocating decreasing levels of immigration. Some billboards have been up since last May, and in early August the Queens Borough President Claire Shulman, along with a dozen local religious leaders denounced the billboards at a news conference.
The man who is paying for the billboards, Craig Nelsen, also attended the news conference. He says he is trying to raise awareness of the population impact of immigration and not to advocate against any particular group of immigrants.
Ironically, one of the billboards is located on the side of an Italian restaurant. One of the owners of this restaurant is an immigrant from Ecuador. The restaurant does not own the building and does not control to whom the billboards are rented.
