Dear Readers:
As we head in to the 2008 national elections in the US, Congress is adjourning with virtually no immigration accomplishments. There were a number of attempts to pass needed legislation relating to arts and sports immigration. A measure to move fashion models out of the H-1B category failed to move out of committee. Another bill that limited O-1 processing to 30 days passed the House Judiciary Committee, but never moved beyond that. A bill to allow P-1 athletes to extend their visas beyond ten years failed to advance. And a bill to create a blanket P visa category that was included in last year’s immigration reform bill did not move this year. At least the House Immigration Subcommittee was having hearings and markups of immigration bills. The Senate Immigration Subcommittee did almost no business this past session. Hopefully, the new Congress and President will be able to summon up the energy to actually pass some bills next year.
