Former Football Player Now Protects US Borders
An article in the Associated Press describes how Jamaal Green, who was once a defensive end for the Philadelphia Eagles, Chicago Bears and the Washington Redskins, has become a border patrol agent. According to Mr. Green, he never intended to play professional football. His dream job actually was to go into law enforcement.
During his junior year in high school, Green began to play football at the urging of one of the team's coaches. Due to his talent on the field, he was named to the New Jersey All-State first team. His success also earned him a full scholarship to the University of Miami, where he helped win a national championship in 2001 during the Rose Bowl game.
In the 2003 NFL draft, Green was picked during the fourth round by the Philadelphia Eagles. After earning an NFC Championship ring with the Eagles, he was joined the Chicago Bears, and then the Washington Redskins.
At a Redskins home game, the US Border Patrol did a pre-game show with the National Anthem. And that is how he discovered the Border Patrol.
After leaving the Redskins, Green continued to receive offers from NFL teams. While at the Border Patrol academy, he received calls from the Oakland Raiders and the Houston Texans with offers to join their practice squads. However, Green decided to pursue his dream as a law enforcement officer.
Green says that football was a way for him to get a ‘free ride’ to college, where he majored in criminology. However, his position as defensive end resulted in many injuries in the NFL. He therefore decided his health was too important to risk playing football.
