New York Governor David Patterson
has issued a rare pardon (only the tenth in the last 40 years) to Hip Hop singer Ricky Waters who was convicted on attempted murder and weapons charges in 1990. The 43 year old singer has lived in the US since he was 11 years old.
The Governor's office cited Waters' clean record during his prison term, his community volunteer work and his anti-violence counseling of young people. The pardon may not mean the end of the singer's fight against deportation, but it is seen as clearing the most serious obstacle to him staying.
