Michigan Will Not Waive NCLEX For Canadian Nurses
Earlier in September, the Michigan Board of Nursing (MBN) declined a proposal to waive the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX) for Canadian nurses that studied, trained or were licensed in Canada. The board declined to waive the exam based on the National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN) recommendations that the NCLEX is not equivalent to the CNAT (Canadian nurse licensure exam).
The board also recommended that Michigan waive the Commission on Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools (CGFNS) examination for Canadian nurses.
A Michigan state law that was passed recently waived the CGFNS exam for Canadian nurses until January 2004 and allowed the nursing board to approve a waiver of the NCLEX if the board determined that the Canadian licensure exam was substantially equivalent to the US licensure exam (NCLEX). Critics say that the board’s decision neuters that law.
There are some who criticize the nursing board for making it tougher for Canadian nurses who wish to practice in Michigan in spite of the severe nursing shortage in the state. Critics also blame the National Council of State Boards of Nursing.
