Hispanic Health Care Improvement Bill Proposed
Senator Jeff Bingaman, D-NM, has recently introduced a bill designed to improve healthcare among Hispanic immigrants. The Hispanic Health Improvement Act of 2002 would expand the State Children Health Insurance Program for Hispanic families and would also emphasize health hazards that disproportionately affect Hispanics such as diabetes, HIV, cancer, and mental health.
The new bill would require the secretary of Health and Human Services to submit an annual report to Congress on how the federal programs helping or improving healthcare for Hispanics.
Rep. Ciro Rodriguez, D-TX, testified before the Health, Education, Labor and Pensions public health subcommittee hearing. His testimony included a plea to expand coverage and improve medical training and education. He also mentioned that Hispanic health care in the U.S. is a national emergency with infectious diseases such as tuberculosis and hepatitis disproportionately high in border states such as Arizona, New Mexico and Texas.
