Survey
Finds Employers are Struggling to Attract and Retain Nurses
A
survey conducted jointly by Watson Wyatt Worldwide, a global consulting
firm, and the American Society for Healthcare Human Resources
Administration (ASHHRA) has found that
U.S.
health care facilities are struggling to attract and retain nurses,
among other medical specialties.
Of
the 110 facilities surveyed, 69 percent stated they are having
difficulty retaining their medical personnel.
Retention of registered nurses was stated to be the number one
staffing problem for 84 percent of those surveyed.
The second highest staff retention problem is pharmacists, while
the third highest retention problem is rehabilitation therapists.
The
survey found that employers are trying to remedy their staffing problems
by adjusting salary levels, providing tuition reimbursements and
arranging more flexible work schedules.
However, the survey also found that employers are not providing
other benefits to their employees, such as health insurance, paid time
off or retiree medical benefits.
