According to Expatica
News, the Belgian federal government has asked the High Council for
Employment to investigate the impact on employment levels if
Belgium
were to open up its borders to workers from the 10 new EU member states.
Belgium
must make a decision about any possible change to the transition regulations
imposed on workers from the 10 new EU states by
May 1, 2006
. It will examine the impact of not
extending the restrictive transition phase, the current situation of workers
from 10 new states in the Belgian jobs market, the impact on illegal employment
and the need for a supervisory system to prevent fraud.
The study must be completed by mid-February and it must take into account
the European Commission report to be released in January. Unions and employers
will need to respond by mid-March.
