INS' New Statistical Yearbook Shows Latest Trends in Immigration

The INS has re lea sed its 2001 Statistical Year b ook. It can b e found online at http://www.immigration.gov/graphics/a b outins/statistics/Year b ook2001.pdf. The report had a num b er of highlights:

 

- refugee arrivals declined for the second consecutive year representing the lowest level since fiscal year 1987

 

- nonimmigrant admissions declined for the first time since 1984

 

- Legal immigration in 2001 (1,064,318) was higher than in 2000 (849,807) due primarily to efforts to reduce the applications b acklog at the INS

 

- 38% of all immigrants were b orn in North America (19% in Mexico ) and 33% were b orn in Asia

 

- 65% of all immigrants intended to reside in six states: California , New York , Florida , Texas , Illinois and New Jersey

 

- A b out 20% of all immigrants intended to reside in New York City or Los Angeles .

 

- Nearly half of all nonimmigrant admissions (32.8 million) were from four countries - Japan (15.4%), the United Kingdom (14.9%), Mexico (13.2%) and Ge rm any (5.3%)

 

- Nearly half of the H-1B workers were b orn in India ; the next highest country is Ch ina at 9%

 

- 608,225 people naturalized in fiscal year 2001; 41% were Asian- b orn and 33% were from North American countries

 

- 71,000 crim ina l aliens were removed; 80% of the removed crim ina l aliens were from Mexico
