Legislative Update
The
Associated Press reported last week that the Tennessee legislature has passed a
bill barring undocumented immigrants and foreign visitors on temporary visas
from acquiring standard driver’s licenses.
The alternate licenses available to such classes of aliens will be marked
as “NOT VALID FOR I.D” and will have a significantly different design than
the standard licenses have. State
officials say that non-citizens have come to Tennessee for driver’s licenses
because of its relaxed requirements and cite the bill as an anti-terrorism
measure. Gov. Bredesen is expected
to sign the bill into law.
