About Toronto

In 1867 Canada was born, and Toronto became the capital of the newly created province of Ontario. Between 1908 and 1915, arts and culture flourished as the new nation established its identity, and the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, the Art Gallery of Ontario, and the Royal Ontario Museum were established.

Waves of immigration to Canada continued and the diversity of immigrants grew, particularly in the periods following World Wars I and II. Toronto continued its transformation into a manufacturing and industrial powerhouse, thanks to its close proximity to natural resources, agricultural land, inexpensive energy, and the nearby markets of the American heartland.

Today, Toronto is home to more than 100 cultures and is Canada's largest city, with a population of 4.7 million. As the capital of Ontario, Toronto is the seat of government for Canada's most populous province and is the industrial and business centre for the country.

For all the attractions that Toronto has to offer, be sure to visit the Toronto Visitors Bureau Web site.

1.       Managing Migration: The Promise of Cooperation

By Martin Susan

Lexington Books, 275 pp.
Paperback, ISBN: 0739113410, $28.95
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0739113410/centerforimmigra

Hardcover, ISBN: 0739113402, $78.99
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0739113402/centerforimmigra

Description: A growing share of the world's population lives in the 175 developing countries, while global income and wealth are increasingly concentrated in the 25 developed countries. The resulting migration from developing to developed countries is proving difficult to manage at national, regional, and local levels. Managing Migration presents the valuable results of the Cooperative Efforts to Manage Emigration project, a bottom-up effort to identify models and best practices for spurring economic development and respect for human rights in migrant countries of origin. Based on the research of experts from North America and Europe, authors Martin, Martin, and Weil discuss the challenges of managing international migration in the 21st century, present case studies in cooperative migration management, and offer recommendations to overcome the existing challenges. Concluding that there is no one-size-fits-all framework for managing migration, but that there are common elements of best-practice migration,
Managing Migration is guaranteed to pique the interest of policy makers and practitioners involved in immigration as well as scholars of geography, anthropology, and international relations.

2.       Immigration And Crime

(New Perspectives on Crime, Deviance, and Law) (Paperback)
Edited by Ramiro Martinez and Abel Valenzuela

New York University Press, 272 pp.
Paperback, ISBN: 0814757057, $22.00
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0814757057/centerforimmigra

Hardcover, ISBN: 0814757049, $70.00
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0814757049/centerforimmigra

Description: While recently much work has been done on the life of immigrants, little is known about contemporary patterns of crime as related to immigration, race, and ethnicity. Central to the topic are questions of stigmatization, employment, immigration status, community life, and discrimination.

The original essays in this much-needed collection broadly assess this state of affairs, providing important insights about past understandings of immigration and crime, many based on theories that have proven to be untrue or racially biased, as well as offering new scholarship on some of the most central topics of concern. Immigration and Crime covers both a variety of immigrant groups—mainly from Asia, the Caribbean, and Latin America—and a variety of topics including: victimization, racial conflict, juvenile delinquency, exposure to violence, homicide, drugs, gangs, and border violence. Overall, the contributors argue that fears of immigrant crime are largely unfounded, as immigrants are themselves often more likely to be the victims of discrimination, stigmatization, and crime.
