This week we begin a special series of articles that will focus on news regarding the elections coming this November. Voters will cast ballots for every seat in the House of Representatives and for one-third of the Senate seats. There are also a number of state races, and while states can themselves have little impact on immigration policy, these races can indicate trends in public sentiment.
One of the most watched races, for immigrant advocates, is between Rep. Lamar Smith, a Texas Republican long known for his restrictive immigration positions, and John Courage, a public school teacher in San Antonio. Courage has been actively courting the immigration community, and many believe this is the best opportunity in years to remove Smith, who was one of the primary architects of the Illegal Immigration Reform and Immigrant Responsibility Act of 1996.
