In the wake of the Arizona immigration law’s passage, Utah Republican Governor Gary Herbert has backed off plans to try and make an E-Verify employer mandate in his state voluntary. Herbert had planned to call a special session of the legislature, but has now scrapped this, according a report in the Salt Lake Tribune. Herbert was worried that a special session would lead to the opposite result of what was intended – that even tougher restrictions would be passed.
