Completed Immigration Court Cases Up 7.3 Percent in 2015

According to a report issued by Syracuse University’s TRAC Immigration, U.S. Immigration Courts completed 7.3 percent more immigration court cases in fiscal year (FY) 2015 than in FY 2014.

From FY 2009 to FY 2014, the number of immigration cases completed each year trended steadily downward. The 7.3 percent increase in FY 2015 – up to 198,105 cases from last year’s 184,597 – marks the first time since FY 2009 that the number of cases completed has increased rather than decreased.

Mexican immigrants still represent the majority of immigration court cases, but their numbers are down almost ten percent from FY 2014 and nearly fifty percent from FY 2009. Immigrants from Honduras, Guatemala, El Salvador, and China – the four most represented nationalities besides Mexico – all saw increases in the number of cases completed by U.S. Immigration Courts.
