As discussed in the article above regarding the Smith Bill which is pending in the US House of Representatives, several visa categories would be eliminated or virtually eliminated under the proposed legislation. IF the bill passes, the categories would be eliminated on September 30, 1996. The State Department has provided ESTIMATES of which cases for adult children of US citizens and permanent residents would be dropped from consideration as a result of not having a current priority date by that time. The information is only provided for public education purposes and does not mean that a case definitely will not be heard. Also, certain persons may fall under exceptions to the eliminations and may still be eligible for a visa after September 30, 1996. You should consult with an attorney for clarification on this issue.
According to the State Department, the available visa numbers are expected to be as follows:
Category Worldwide Mexico Philippines FA-1 (unmarried Current 02 April 1995 02 April 1986 children of citizen) FA-2B (unmarried 02 Sept 1990 02 Sept 1990 02 Sept 1990 children of permanent resident) FA-2 (married 02 Jan 1994 02 Sept 1987 02 Aug 1984 children of citizen)
