Two nationals of Honduras have sued the federal government on behalf of close to 200 American-born children of Honduran parents. The suit claims that Hondurans are entitled to the same benefits as Nicaraguans that have just been granted amnesty status under NACARA, the Nicaraguan and Central American Relief Act. The plaintiffs claim that thousands of Hondurans fled their country in the 1980s when the Reagan Administration used their country as a base for the Nicaraguan “Contras” to launch attacks on the Sandinistas.

Up to 80,000 Hondurans are currently facing deportation. Several members of Congress appear to back expanding NACARA to include Hondurans, but no legislation has been passed by either the House or Senate Immigration Subcommittees.
