This week the Justice Department announced that it would extend Temporary Protected Status for Salvadorans. According to Attorney General John Ashcroft, El Salvador is still trying to recover from the devastation of two earthquakes that struck in early 2001. The program will be extended for one year, allowing those who are registered to live and work in the US until September 9, 2003. About 260,000 people have registered for TPS.

To be eligible, the person must have been in the US before TPS was granted, that is, before February 13, 2001. Applicants must register for the extension between September 9 and November 12. Only those who have already registered are allowed to re-register.

Salvadoran officials say that the money people working in the US send home is crucial in helping recovery efforts.
