From the American Hospital Association:

A record 28,737 applicants participated yesterday in the National Resident Matching Program’s annual match day, which pairs U.S. and foreign medical students with residency programs at U.S. teaching hospitals. First-year residency slots rose by 395 to 22,240, an all-time high. A record 15,242 U.S. medical school seniors applied and 94% were paired with a program of their choice. Nearly half of the more than 10,300 applicants from foreign medical schools were matched with a program, as were 72% of the nearly 1,900 applicants from osteopathic schools. The program reported increased interest and positions in family medicine, reversing a decline in those positions since 1998. About 7.6% of U.S. seniors were matched with a family medicine position, up from 7.2% last year.
