The Immigration and Naturalization Service has extended the designation of Liberia under the Temporary Protected Status (“TPS”) program for an additional year until March 28, 1998. The INS may designate a state as falling under the TPS category upon finding that the state is experiencing ongoing armed conflict, environmental disaster, or extraordinary and temporary conditions that prevent nationals or residents of the country from returning in safety.

Liberia has been designated for TPS status since 1991. The most recent redesignation will only cover Liberians residing in the US as of June 1, 1996. Eligible Liberian nationals must register or re-register for TPS status between April 7, 1997 and October 6, 1997. The filing fee is $50 and an additional $70 if work authorization is sought.
