This was truly predictable. The House has added provisions to the funding bill for the Department of Homeland Security that would bar any DHS dollars going toward the President’s deferred action programs. The President has said he would veto the bill and Democrats warned they would filibuster any effort to pass it in the Senate. So there was NO chance it would pass. Today the Senate followed through with every Democratic Senator and Nevada Republican Dean Heller voting down the House bill. And now we’re left in a situation where House Republicans will either need to back down and pass a clean bill or we’ll be facing a shutdown of DHS which does a lot more than just manage immigration matters. They are in charge of airport security, the Coast Guard, disaster preparedness and all kinds of other activities Americans probably won’t be happy to learn are going to cease until the zealots in Congress back down.
