Pablo A. Ruiz, Ph.D. – a Boston University engineer and Argentinean immigrant – has designed software that could save Americans over $1 billion a year in electricity costs. The “grid smoothing” software designed by Ruiz and his team monitors power grid congestion and distributes power resources more efficiently, simultaneously lowering utility costs for American consumers and preventing energy blackouts during peak hours. Ruiz’s software also measures input from renewable energy sources like wind turbines and solar panel fields, filtering in power from those sources as frequently and effectively as possible.
Pablo Ruiz earned his Ph.D. in Electrical and Computer Engineering from the University of Illinois and a Bachelor’s in Electrical Engineering from the University Tecnológica Nacional in Argentina. He currently works as a research associate professor at Boston University, where he specializes in the analysis and design of power and energy markets.
