There are many foreign players competing in the National Basketball Association, the world’s most prestigious basketball league. But Satnam Singh has just become the first Indian-born player drafted by an NBA franchise. He’ll be joining the Dallas Mavericks this coming season.

Singh’s story is one of rising from modest means (his father is a wheat farmer in a small village) to the highest echelons of sport. And “highest” is the right term – he is 7 feet, 2 inches tall. ESPN published a story on Singh in 2012 that provides a lot of interesting background on the Indian sensation’s rise. Singh was recruited to play at a basketball academy/high school in Florida in 2010 and he becomes one of the first players in years to be recruited directly from high school.

Good luck Satnam!
