Several months ago we reported that the Immigration and Naturalization Service had a number of vacant top-level positions that had remained empty for some time. INS Commissioner Doris Meissner has recently announced several new appointments.
Col. Michael A. Pearson has been appointed the Executive Associate Commissioner for Field Operations. This position is the third highest ranking INS position. Col. Pearson replaces William Slattery who resigned after a number of complaints were received from INS field officials and after internal investigations were launched relating to field operations activities. Colonol Pearson is a career military police officer with 24 years experience in the US Army.
Commissioner Meissner also named new leaders to the three regional offices to whom each of the directors of local INS offices report (not to be confused with the four regional INS service centers). INS Vermont Service Center Director William Yates has been promoted to director of the INS’ Eastern Region. Mark Reed, director of the INS’ San Diego District Office, has been named Central Region Director. And Johnny Williams, head of the San Diego Border Patrol Sector, has been named Western Regional Director.
Commissioner Meissner is expected to fill the Deputy INS Commissioner position within the next few weeks. This is the number two position at the INS.
Each of these positions still must be approved by the Department of Justice and/or the Office of Personnel Management.
