Attorney General Janet Reno has again extended Temporary Protected Status for nationals of Rwanda. TPS for Rwandans will remain in place until 6 June 1997. This will allow Rwandan nationals safe haven in the US until the Attorney General deems that the civil strife in that country has been reduced enough to allow Rwandan nationals to safely return to their home country. Rwandans have been in this category since June 1994

In order to take advantage of TPS status, a Rwandan national must file a new I-821 Application For Temporary Protected Status and Form I-765 Application for Employment Authorization, as well as the filing fees. Applications must be submitted by December 16, 1996. Late registrations will only be accepted if “good cause” can be shown.
