Washington DC Attorney general Files Lawsuit Against ICE, Seeks Information Regarding Immigration Arrests

Washington DC Attorney General Karl A. Racine has sued the Trump administration, demanding the administration release information regarding an operation which resulted more than 130 undocumented immigrants were arrested in the Washington area. In July, the Attorney General submitted a Freedom of Information Act request to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) requesting records pertaining to Operation Eagle’s Shield, in which it is alleged that ICE agents racially profiled and specifically targeted Latino immigrants. Although 132 individuals were arrested, only 37 were charged with criminal offenses, while the remaining 95 were placed into deportation hearings. The District of Columbia’s status as a sanctuary city should prevent such operations, activists say that immigrants in the area are continually detained by federal agents at courthouses, in which U.S. marshals have jurisdiction.
